Ralph's solution to the limited distance of the detector was just to snip off the wires and sticky tape on a battery and some other doodads and thingummies.

The prison colony on the moon was just a notion that took my fancy, and in my head it was a slight nod to Darke's characters in Steel Nation as they hailed from a monarchy established on the moon (I'm sure the prison colony is several vast craters away).
