The Ex

That first panel is a twist on the old "floating love hearts" cartoon trope - being a creature of horror, one of Waite's infatuation hearts is a little more graphic than the norm.

The tentacled monster Gyrode is cooing over is Waite's pet shoggoth named "Shoggy". The last time he was seen, he was a little nipper who preferred sitting on his master's shoulder. He's grown a bit since then, and is a bit too large to sit on anyone's shoulder!
