Glossary

As with all Science fiction and fantasy stories, Tales of Sin has slowly been collecting it’s own jargon and odd turns of phrases ranging from place names to out right slang. Here we will do our best to collect these terms and their meaning.

Tales Of Sin: The Glossary

A

Aether: elementary particles that make magic possible.

Aether neutron: A particle and bi-product of magical activity created when aether is forced to fuse to power a spell. These particles break down quickly back into aether, leaving radiation in its wake.

Aether Star: a solar body that forms aether particles in a similar fashion to how stars create atoms.

Aethionics: The scientific study of magic.

Airolas: Elementist god of air magic, travel, communication and music. Usually depicted as an elemental dragon.

Aquarius Springs: a megacorporation that deals in water and agriculture. One of the five Pillar families that founded the City of Light

(The) Assembly: The government of Centrissal which comprises of the representatives of the twenty two counties that make up the country.

B

Barlington North: One of the counties of the Assembly of Centrissal situated on The Plains. Contains a large forest and two lakes, one of which is bisected by the boarder to Barlington South. Aquarius Spring’s bio-domes are located here.

Barlington South: One of the counties of the Assembly of Centrissal situated on The Plains. It’s famous for its once plentiful fields of wheat and corn. These shrunk in size once Aquarius Springs broke into the agricultural market.

Blight Dragon: a creature native to the Blight Zone: a large flying lizard that feeds on aether deposits.

Blight Zone: Also known as Kūwěi Qū, the Zone is a land blighted by magical fallout, where electronic devices fail to function. The Zone was created during the first galactic war when fighting mages caused a magical blast equivalent to a megaton nuke to go off. Settlements can still be found here that are essentially frontier towns. At the centre is an enchanted forest where many heavily mutated creatures reside.

(The) Bluffs: A region of Centrissal known for it’s vast rolling hills and dynamic coastal cliffs. It’s made up of four separate counties.

C

Cadton: One of the counties of the Assembly of Centrissal situated on The Plains. Known for it’s fishing industry, Cadton is found on the eastern coast of Centrissal.

Caracal Tech: A corporation dealing in vehicle manufacture and fuel production. Fancies themselves the rivals to Salmanic Inc. Sold a lot of generators during the aftermath of the Revolution. The owner of the company is rumoured to be a member of the New Dawn Council.

Casinopolis: An oil rig turned gambling resort town. Owned by the mob, Casinopolis is the Las Vegas of the seas.

Centrissal: One of the continents of Lusinia. Notable locations include the Galmanee desert, the Plains, the Dustlands and the City of Light.

(The) City of Light: Capital of Centrissal. Unique as it is a collection of colossal plates attached to giant pipes that stretch into the sky like a massive tree.

Clawdaggun: A port city in northern Centrissal. The first to be attacked by the Twigarnians, starting the planetary war between Lusinia and Twigarnia.

(The) Coves: A region of Centrissal known for the large coves. There are six coves spread across four counties, the largest of which is a major tourism hotspot.

(The) Crown: A mountain range situated on the northern pole of Lusinia that encircles a frozen wasteland, hence the name. The inhabitants are mostly aggressive tribes of Yog’talore who battle for supremacy.

D

Dalminetti Mafia: One of the mafia families of the City of Light. They mostly operate on the second plate but hold a few blocks of turf on the third plate. Mostly deal in extortion rings and protection rackets.

Dìguó Dàlù: One of the countries of Lusinia. Known for having a ring of technologically advanced cities circling the Blight Zone. Notable locations include Simplicity Park, Teito and Fort Rekzo.

(the) Dì sān bǎn Triads: A City of Light mafia family originating from the Dìguó Dàlù, namely the city of Teito. They dwell on the third plate and are looking to break into the smuggling business.

Drago the Dragon: Petty smuggler that operates out of The City of Light. Runs operations through the City’s Skyport.

Draguna Locar: Capital of New Scania, situated by a great lake.

(The) Dustlands: the northern most edge of the Galmanee desert. The region the City of Light can be found in.

E

Elactinide Incorporated: a megacorporation that deals in telecoms and information technology. One of the five Pillar families that founded the City of Light.

Elementism: The Mage religion centred around a pantheon of 6 gods. The main themes of their teachings are of many separate pieces coming together to make a whole, whether that whole be civilisation, society or the universe as a whole. Each god has many planets named after them just to be confusing.

Epona: One of the counties of Centrissal in the region known as The Coves. It’s known for it’s sandy beaches, sleepy fishing towns and excessive tourism.

F

Fair Folk: Denizens of the Enchanted Forest at the centre of the Blight Zone and descendants of the survivors of the magical event that caused the Blight in the first place. Their bodies and minds are warped by aether poisoning to the point where they cannot survive outside of aether rich environments. They take their name from ancient legends of fairies. There’s minimum contact between them and the outside world but there are stories of them striking bargains with wary travellers, luring people into the forest to join their number or outright stealing children from homesteads foolish enough to settle too close to the outskirts of the forest. Rumour has it that fertility amongst the Fair Folk is repressed due to the poisoning so newborns are a rare event. They sustain their numbers by bringing people in to be tainted by the forest. It’s because of this that missionaries are banned from crossing the boundary, although some ignore this rule and attempt to smuggle medicines and clean water to The Fair Folk. They rarely return.

Federation of Solar Systems (F.S.S): The governing body of the Galition of Pikar, the Galition that Lusinia and Twigarnia resides in. The F.S.S was originally ruled by an Emperor who’s seat of power was at the centre of the galition. Steps are being made to make the Federation more democratic, each planet electing a team of officials to represent them. Lusinia and Twigarnia’s relationship with the F.S.S became strained after the Fourth Galactic war but now the war between Lusinia and Twigarnia has ended, steps are being made to repair the relationship, diplomats from the F.S.S present as mediators during the peace talks between the two planets.

Finnius Filtrations: A megacorporation that deals in waste and sewage disposal. One of the five Pillar families that founded the City of Light. See also Pooplinger.

Firefly Foundation: A charity set up to help those struggling in the wake of the Revolution.

Frankoni: A City of Light mafia family who mostly dwell on the third plate, their turf made up of the warehouses surrounding the elevator out of the City. Deals in smuggling and trafficking.

G

Galition: a galactic nation, boundaries set in space.

Galmanee Desert: a desert that dominates central Centrissal.

Galmanoc: A city located within the Galmanee desert, situated on a giant outcropping of rock that rises out of the sands like a knife from a wound. Some of the oldest buildings on Lusinia are located at the peak, with the lower half of the city morphing into a more modern cityscape.

Gifelle Arms & Weapons Marketing Corporation: A weapons manufacturer known for dodgy guns and dodgier marketing campaigns.

GR4-71N: the serial number for a mage cloned from 1000 year-old DNA.

Greglath: The elementist god of water magic, fishing, knowledge, oracles and storms. Is depicted as an anthropomorphic sea-turtle who wields a harpoon made of whale bone.

Greglathian Basilica: The main institute of worship for Greglath.

Guild of Champions: an organisation attached to the Church of Kraklag committed to upholding justice within the magical community.

I

Ilymp: Elementist goddess of earth magic, the hunt, agriculture, textiles and apothecaries. Depicted as an elemental wolf.

(The) Ilympic Cathedral: The main body of worship of the goddess Ilymp.

Irishma: One of the counties of the Assembly of Centrissal found in The Plains. Irishma is known for its many ranches and prime grasslands.

Isla Santa Perdida: a country on Lusinia known for frequent and bloody civil wars. Otherwise its a tropical paradise.

J

Jehoth: Elementist god of dark magic, commerce, thievery, trickery and charity. They are depicted as a non-binary person draped in dark robes.

K

Kraklag: Elementist god of light magic, war, justice, longevity, technology and luck. Depicted as an armoured man with glowing eyes and flowing locks.

Kraklagian Church: The main institution of worship for Kraklag.

Kūwěi: The people that live in the settlements of the Blight Zone.

Kūwěi Qū:See Blight Zone.

L

Lusinia: The Planet of Light; Lusinia is a planet with an unusual orbit in that it is forever eclipsing it’s solar twin, Twigarnia. Lusinia is a technologically advanced planet that many describe as being a capitalistic hellscape.

M

Megaloaf™: a bread alternative popular with doomsday preppers due to it’s incredibly long shelf life. Made from mushrooms.

(The) Munroe Sisters: A City of Light cockney mafia family. The titular sisters inherited the gang from their father, their membership mostly consisting of burly meat-headed thugs. Their turf is comprised mostly of the second plate’s entertainment district, the Sisters dealing in gambling and blood sports.

Mythril: A type of metallic ore that has aether resistant properties. Is used to make armour plating, bladed weaponry and to protect electrical circuitry from magical radiation.

N

New Dawn: a left wing terrorist group hell bent on introducing socialism to Lusinia by any means necessary.

New Dawn Council: The ruling council of New Dawn. No one is supposed to know their identities but are rumoured to be “New Money” families looking to usurp power from the Pillars by manipulating the desperate into acts of terrorism in order to harm the Pillar’s businesses, steal blackmail material alongside any other intel and to generally make the founding families look bad.

New Scania: A country on Lusinia. Known for fine art and romantic mountain retreats. Is the closest thing to a socialist nation Lusinia has, despite being the only country that still has a king.

Nilapani: The City state of sapphire waters of the Wài Quān Dynasty. It features a large lake and many rivers flowing to the coast. The city state itself has an Indian flair to it.

O

Oracle Wares: a corporation dealing in information technology and is Elactinide’s biggest rival. The owner of the company is secretly on the New Dawn Council.

(The) Order of the Galactic Administrators of Ilympic Cathedral: During the first galactic war, each of the elementist institutions created militant orders to fight the battle against the rise of black magic. With Black magic no longer being such an issue, these order were repurposed for a new role. Not a lot is known about what shadowy role the Administrators originally held, all records being lost after the 84th Grand Master of the Cathedral lost a game of poker to the owners of a budding accountancy firm. The Firm now runs the Administrators and offers the service of filling out any paperwork you may require and will file your taxes for a fee.

(The) Order of the Galactic Disciplinarians of the Kraklagian Church: During the first galactic war, each of the elementist institutions created militant orders to fight the battle against the rise of black magic. With Black magic no longer being such an issue, these order were repurposed for a new role. The Disciplinarians acted as assassins, enforcing swift justice when the courts could not. They still deliver this service to those willing to pay the steep price. As far as the general public are concerned, however, they were shut down after the war ended.

(The) Order of the Galactic Finders of the Tserulian Monastery: During the first galactic war, each of the elementist institutions created militant orders to fight the battle against the rise of black magic. With Black magic no longer being such an issue, these order were repurposed for a new role. The Finders were originally bounty hunters. They still perform this role for the wealthy but as far as the general public are concerned, they no longer exist.

(The) Order of the Galactic Inspectors of the Greglathian Basilica: During the first galactic war, each of the elementist institutions created militant orders to fight the battle against the rise of black magic. With Black magic no longer being such an issue, these order were repurposed for a new role. The Inspectors will oversee or inspect something for a price such as a mayoral election or an audit. It is a very vague job description but in corrupt civilisations such as The City of Light, being able to pay someone to mediate fraught negotiations and level the playing field can be a boon.

(The) Order of the Galactic Redemptionists of the Temple of Jehoth: an order of black mages that many hold responsible for the first galactic war and the resulting loss of followers of Jehoth. They believed that Jehoth was the one true god and that only they could bring unity to the universe. Some say a small faction remains, awaiting Jehoth’s chosen to rise so they can finish their work.

P

Pik Lavy: a settlement of Yog’talore in Zhenya located in the mountains on the northern shore of the island. There is a volcano at its centre that the Yog’talore have harnessed to power their settlement. Pik Lavy is the most advanced of the Yog’talore tribes, excelling in black smithing and various steam powered devices.

(The) Pillars: The founding families of the City of Light, each owning a megacorporation deeply involved with the City’s running. There were thirteen at the City’s inception, each contributing a service from electrical power to security to entertainment. After a particularly hostile takeover, thirteen was reduced to five.

(The) Plains: A region of Centrissal comprised of five counties covering fertile lands. Was once the farming capital of the region until Aquarius Springs built their bio-domes.

Planatary Special Forces (PSF): Lusinia’s military. Mercantile by nature, they rent out the fleet to the highest bidder. Headed by the Board of Directors which is run by Jackie Maris, Marketing Director; Tobias Anderson, Financial Director; Albert Flynne, Sales Director, Varick Carlton, Government Liason; and Stephan Kinkle, Director of Human Resources. Notable previous members of the PSF include Commander Ivan, Doug McCracken and Major Stanly Morrison.

(The) Playground: A club in Galmanoc where the commanding elite of New Dawn’s Galmanoc cells like to hang out. Very exclusive and even more expensive.

Polaris: One of the Continents of Lusinia situated at the south pole. Many a corporation has built testing sites here so they may develop their products with minimal scrutiny. The Settlements of Polaris are all owned and maintained by the companies that use the site as a testing bed.

Pooplinger: The family that owns Finnius Filtrations. The head and only living member of this illustrious family is Finnius Artimus Pooplinger the Fifth

Portcombe: A seaside town on Western Centrissal.

R

Rekzo: A fort found in the western mountains of the Dìguó Dàlù. The people of Rekzo consider themselves the guardians of the Dìguó Dàlù’s soul. They chronicle the history and culture of the country, saving any artefacts from before the Blight and storing them in their underground vaults. They also send scholars, teachers and sages out to the city states of the Wài Quān to teach in the universities and museums, passing on the knowledge of the past to the new generations.

Remsida: A town on western Centrissal.

Salmanic: The Salmanic family owned Salmanic Incorporated. Current notable members include Silverton Salmanic, the final CEO of Salmanic Inc; Silvia Salmanic, heir to the family title and company; and Sonny Salmanic, the black sheep of the family. Other notable members included Victor Salmanic, Silverton’s father and predecessor; Cecilia Salmanic, wife of Silverton and mother of Silvia and Sonny; and Overton Salmanic, who reduced the number of Pillar families from 13 to 5. Percival Oudart Salmanic was the company’s founder.

Salmanic Incorporated: a megacorporation dealing in electrical power. One of the five Pillar companies that founded the City of Light. Arguably the most powerful of the five.

Samprini: a seaside town on western Centrissal.

Shogun Yoshida: Lord of Fort Rekzo, keeper of the Dìguó Dàlù’s history and a councillor to the Wài Quān Dynasty.

Simplicity park: A tourist destination for people wanting to see what it’s like to live in a world with no technology established by an enterprising couple from Centrissal, much to the locals chagrin. The entrance is the only part of the park where the aetheric interference doesn’t disrupt digital devices. The park itself is a cross between living museum and resort. Some friendly Yog’talore run classes on how to weave and whittle where as other parts of the park let people dress up and play cowboy. There’s even horse riding lessons.

Slateman: The family that own Slateman Arms LTD. Robert Slateman is the current owner of the company. His five children are all heavily involved with the company, Robert more of a figure head these days. The Slatemans are the most functional family unit of the Pillars.

Slateman Arms LTD: a megacorporation dealing in construction and is also the owner of 70% of the City of Lights’ housing estates. One of the five Pillar families that founded the City of Light.

Slonitch: One of the counties of the Assembly of Centrissal found on The Plains. Slonitch is known for its many mining towns and sheep herds.

Snavona: Northern Continent of Lusinia. An arctic wasteland. The Crown is located here.

T

Ta’alaq: one of the city states of the Wài Quān Dynasty. It has an Arabic flair, it’s name meaning radiance. It borders the entrance to Simplicity Park and is known for its golden beaches and tourism district.

Teito: one of the city states of the Wài Quān Dynasty and closest ally to Fort Rekzo. Has many Japanese influences.

Tricshire: A town on western Centrissal

(The) Tropics: an archipelago that connects the most westernly point of Centrissal to the easterly edges of Zhenya and Dìguó Dàlù. Known for its string of resort towns and luxury tropical retreats. The richest people in the world all own holiday homes here.

Tserulia: Elementist goddess of fire magic, love, fertility, cuisine and the forge. Depicted as a beautiful dark haired woman with flaming eyes.

Tserulian Monastery: The main institution of worship for Tserulia.

Twigarnia: The Planet of Dark and Lusinia’s solar twin. It’s orbit leads to it forever being eclipsed by Lusinia. Twigarnia has nine moons that reflect enough light to grant it twilight during the day. Twigarnia is rich in aether, granting those that live there magical powers. Twigarnia is a queendom and a matriarchal society.

Typer: Someone who fits a stereotype obnoxiously well.

U

Undercit: a shanty town that resides under the City of Light. A hive of scum and villainy, more so than the City above it.

V

Vihreä: The Northern Forests of New Scania is home to half a dozen Yog’talore tribes, some having been forcibly removed from Centrissal. As a result, these tribes are not particularly friendly with humans, a very tenuous peace lying between the human settlements outside Vihreä and the Yog’talore tribes within.

Vladimir Kushkin: A Zhenyan mobster that operates out of the City of Light. Deals in arms sales.

Wài Quān: The citizens of the Wài Quān Dynasty.

Wài Quān Dynasty: a collection of 19 city states that circle the Dìguó Dàlù, far enough away from the Blight Zone to allow all the modern trappings of civilization to work. The Wài quān are considered the true citizens of the Dìguó Dàlù, the people of the Blight Zone being treated as a mere inconvenience by the ruling class.

Y

Yak’Vac Isles: this is where the rest of Centrissal’s Yog’talore tribes were shipped off to. These tribes main source of food is fish, the tribes building ships from the woods of the forest found on the largest of the Isles. They rarely venture out of their designated waters, however, preferring to remain insular.

Yanolc: A town in western Centrissal.

Yon’Ravna: The hunting grounds of tribes of Yog’talore found in the Dìguó Dàlù, towards the centre of the Blight Zone, encircling the enchanted forest but keeping a healthy distance.

Yog’talore: Sentient creatures native to Lusinia. Typically large and muscular with tusks and backs covered in hair. Their skin tones are shades of green. They’re carnivores, with diets similar to wolves. They tattoo themselves with symbols representing their many achievements such as completing higher education or starting a family. Many are still bitter over how they were treated during Human colonisation of their planet and the loss of their lands.

Z

Zhenya: a mountainous continent with vast forest land coating most of the flat areas, the majority of the terrain not covered in forest land consisting of mountain ranges and active volcanoes. The northern most parts of the continent are covered in snow for 7 months of the year. The centre of the continent houses a great lake that most of the cities and towns are located around. It’s a wild and rugged continent home to many mighty beasts. The local fauna is pretty scary too.

Magic and Elementism

Different branches of magic can be organised by elemental schools, each element being powered by different emotions and personality types. Here’s a breakdown of what powers each element.
