I am a serial hobbyist. Basically I pick up lots of hobbies and one of my greatest failings is never completing anything. This used to genuinely depress me and it’s taken a few years to learn not to get anxious over unfinished projects. After all, the idea of having a hobby is that they are supposed to be fun things to do, right?
Something that’s been on the list for a very, very long time is my Warhammer 40K army. How long? Well my particular regiment of choice was a limited edition set released in 1997 as part of a tie-in to the Zulu-inspired display “The Battle of Big Toof River” (In retrospect it’s a little culturally blind to have represented the valiant Zulu tribes as the mongoloid green-skinned football hooligans that are 40K’s Orks but it was the 90’s, a naive age of people just doing things without thinking about it too hard).
That means I’ve had a hobby on my to-do list that is 23(!) years old. I am hoping that 2020 will be the year I finally tackle this item! I’ve wanted to blog about my army for a bloody long time and circumstances are such that I now have time (and space!) to work on it.
Just for a disclaimer: I’m not an expert painter and I know my models aren’t the prettiest they could be. Frankly, I’m just happy if I can keep paint inside the lines! If I fussed over highlights and the like I don’t think I’d ever consider any model to be “finished”.
Before getting stuck back into all things Warhammer 40K, I’ve also recently gotten into buying figures from Hero Forge, a website where you can design your own miniatures and then have them produced in plastic (or, if you have a 3D printer, you can download the model files and print it yourself). I recently had a few models made up based on mine and my wife’s Dungeons and Dragons characters. Yeah, we’re nerdy enough to play DnD semi-regularly with friends.
The first three of these were for my wife as part of her Christmas present and the last one was just for me.
I’m very impressed with the quality of these minis so I’ve ordered a bunch more!
